A multi-input, multi-output scheme based on sliding-mode control and a new switching logic is proposed for setpoint tracking in aeroengines subject to output constraints. The strategy extends existing results based on single-input sliding-mode regulators with min–max switching logic to the multi-input case, attempting to make full use of available control actuators for enhanced performance. A multivariable sliding-mode controller is used as the nominal regulator, and a set of single-input sliding regulators with min–max selection logic is included to protect limits when necessary. Further, an innovative predictor-based switching logic is applied to monitor the process and to govern the transitions between the main regulator and the limiters. A simulation-based comparative study is conducted to compare the existing single-input approach to the proposed controller, reflecting two clear advantages. Finally, the new controller is implemented into a high-fidelity nonlinear engine simulator known as C-MAPSS40k to further validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
