The measurement of pseudototal pressure is used to study the impact that a set of guide vanes, called a swirler, has on flow direction in a rotating detonation engine. In experiments, a special swirler redirected the flow ahead of the detonation chamber, and the flow direction downstream of the chamber was determined using a rotatable pseudopitot tube. The study revealed that the flow did not change direction after passing through the detonation wave propagating in the chamber. This leads to the conclusion that hot-flow direction can be controlled through guide vanes placed in the cold flow upstream of the detonation chamber.
