Optimization techniques are used to determine the total mass required for additional passive radiation shielding during a space mission to reduce radiation exposures from galactic cosmic rays to NASA lifetime standards. The mission selected is a flyby Mars mission with a return to Earth, and the shielding chosen is in the form of morphing high-density polyethylene panels that would provide additional protection during large solar storms. This novel concept of adaptive, readily morphing, optimized radiation shielding shows promise in reducing the required passive shielding mass for protecting against both galactic cosmic rays and solar events.
