This paper investigates a fault-tolerant-control approach combining sliding-mode control and prescribed-performance-control technique to improve the transient performance of nonlinear systems when actuator faults occur. Firstly, an extended state observer is introduced into nonlinear systems for online estimating the values of actuator faults, and then eliminating their effect, and a prescribed-performance function is incorporated into the control design by transforming tracking errors, which guarantees both transient and steady-state control performance. Then, a sliding-mode-control-based fault-tolerant control is presented for nonlinear systems in the presence of unknown faults by using the transformed tracking errors. Furthermore, the stability and convergence characteristic of the closed-loop system are both rigorously proved. Finally, the suggested design method is employed to air-breathing-supersonic-missile attitude dynamics, and comparative simulation results indicate that the proposed control scheme can obtain a better steady-state and transient performance.
