Description This volume represents one of a sequence of publications covering the field of thermophysics for over a decade. Thermophysics as a space technology has experienced a rapid growth and indeed has been molded into a well-defined interdisciplinary subject of considerable fundamental and practical importance. It is founded on the basic principles of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and optical physics, and its rapid development is attributed to its essential and major role in helping man satisfy his basic desire to seek scientific and engineering information concerning space and Earth's environment. The papers in this volume were selected from the thermophysics sessions at the 12th Aerospace Sciences Meeting in Washington, D.C. in January 1974 and the AIAA/ASME Thermophysics and Heat Transfer Conference in Boston, MA in July 1974. The volume contains the most advanced and timely papers representing four distinct areas of thermophysical research and technology: thermal contact resistance, heat pipes, radiative transfer, and ablation.
