Information concerning droplets impinging on airfoils, including their drag coefficient, that depends on the droplet shape is needed to feed computational codes used to simulate the ice accretion process on wing surfaces. A new model is presented to predict the droplet ratio of deformation for a given flowfield. This model is based on the analogy of a distorted droplet and a damped spring-mass system. It differs from known Taylor analogy breakup model, Clark’s model, and droplet deformation and breakup model in some departing assumptions. Comparisons of the model results with experimental data in the stagnation line show excellent agreement. The new model proposed here will aid to determine the drag coefficient evolution, being able to be included in ice accretion codes.
