Description It has become clear that progress in turbojet development will be determined to a large extent by the availability of advanced instrumentation for propulsion research and development. Two recurring questions are what to measure and how to measure. New instrumentation techniques provide the answer to the "how to measure" question. Other considerations pointing to the need for advanced instrumentation has to do with engine controls, airflow, viscosity, unsteady flow measurements, flow visualization, determination of flow field in three dimensions, and measurement of stresses in blades and disks, and more. The papers in this volume were drawn from the Symposium on Instrumentation for Airbreathing Propulsion that was held at the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School, September 19-21,1972, and then revised prior to publication herein. Sponsors for the Symposium were the Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory; Research and Technology Division, Naval Air Systems Command; U. S. Army Air Mobility Research and Development Laboratories; Office of Naval Research; Air Force Office of Scientific Research; and NASA Lewis Research Center.
