The capturability of homing guidance schemes for missiles equipped with a strapdown seeker is analyzed. For air-to-air engagement, the missiles should intercept a fast-moving target while maintaining lock-on of the target throughout the engagement. The seeker’s field-of-view limit restricts the maneuvers of the missile, resulting in a reduction of the capture region. In this study, pure proportional navigation guidance and a look angle constrained guidance law consisting of pure proportional navigation and look angle control are considered. To address capturability, the characteristics of the guidance laws are investigated, and the capturable region of the pure proportional navigation guidance and the look angle constrained guidance are analyzed. Regarding a narrow field of view, the capturable region of the pure proportional navigation guidance is significantly reduced, but the look angle constrained guidance can extend the capturable region.
