Experimental investigations of the base flow characteristics of a slender cone at Mach 6 were carried out over a range of unit Reynolds numbers from approximately 7 × 10 6 / m to 15 × 10 6 / m in the Boeing/AFOSR Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel. The base pressure coefficient was shown to decrease with increasing unit Reynolds number under laminar boundary-layer conditions. Under turbulent boundary-layer conditions, the base pressure coefficient decreased slightly with increasing unit Reynolds number. Normalized and scaled base pressures were compared with base pressure correlations developed by Lamb and Oberkampf and a correlation developed by DeChant and Wagnild. Pressure fluctuation measurements on the base exhibit a notable correlation with Mack’s second-mode instability frequencies measured at the shoulder. Double-pass schlieren imaging was used to capture flow features in the near-base flowfield. Spectral proper orthogonal decomposition of schlieren images showed the second-mode instability in the boundary layer and its effects on the base. Strut interference was also characterized for both static base pressures and base pressure fluctuations.
