This paper deals with the environmental aspects and experience gained from the NOx optimisation of the marine GenSet from MAN B&W Holeby Diesel. The NOx emission is reduced with increased compression ratio, and the specific fuel consumption is only slightly effected by this optimisation. The technology used for the unrestricted low load operation of the engines is presented, together with an outline of the special operational conditions prevailing under large electrical load fluctuations. This occurs for instance during discharging and loading of the vessel by means of its own cargo handling equipment. Additionally, the latest service experience from heavy fuel burning auxiliary engines on large container vessels is presented.
