The output of an engine is limited by the amount of air available in the cylinder for combustion and by the mechanical and thermal stresses of the single components. The pressure charging raises the air throughout but also increases the cylinder pressures at the same time. The temperatures increase with the higher output. Based on numerous measurements, this report explains how different factors, such as speed, fuel consumption, valve-overlapping and the charging air temperature influence the exhaust temperature as well as the temperatures of piston and exhaust valve, and also how the charging air pressure affects the pressures in the cylinder. It is shown by example of a high-speed pressure charged diesel engine for rail traction that by undertaking certain steps it is possible to attain a considerable increase in output without a corresponding rise in thermal stress.
