A brief review of the principal advanced composite manufacturing processes will be made covering contact moulding, vacuum bagging, autoclaving, pultrusion, filament winding and resin injection in relation to their production rate and current application areas. This will highlight that even continuous processes such as pultrusion cannot really be classified as 'Mass' or 'Volume' processes in the same way as say injection moulding or metal stamping. The emergence, development and future of new second generation; automated manufacturing technologies (i.e. High Speed Fibre Filament Placement and Resin Transfer Moulding) capable of producing parts with cycle times under one part per minute will be reviewed and applications identified. These emerging manufacturing concepts will then be characterized in terms of the need for automation, on-line process control and computer integration in each of the following areas: Raw materials preparation and handling, tool cleaning, preparartion, and handling and art production and finishing.
