This assessment of the status of recent electric propulsion component developments in Japan has resulted in the following conclusion and recommendations: The automotive electric vehicle propulsion effort in Japan is the product of government, academic and private industry initiatives and a vision for the 1990's which is driven by national and societal interests. Japan is strongly committed to the rapid development of electric propulsion technology because it is more efficient and will help them meet their goal of conserving energy and thereby improving national security, reference the section entitled Battery Pack and Electric Drive Efficiency. The Japanese Electric Vehicle Association is currently conducting long term planning to set a basic framework for the formulation and implementation of electric transportation policy into the 21st century. Since 1981, their goals and completion schedules have been available to the West in the form of NEDO medium and long range plans for the commercial implementation of battery and fuel cell programs in the public utility sector.
