In this paper, several total cost of ownership (TCO)-related stakeholder strategies to promote electric vehicles have been evaluated. It has been shown that there a significant differences in the effectiveness of strategies. Before choosing a strategy, the right strategy in dependence on effectiveness and costs has to be evaluated. However, experiences from different markets have shown that TCO is just one of many important factors in the automotive purchasing process. Despite intensive efforts, e.g. in Norway or France, electric vehicles have not gained a decisive market penetration. Other parameters, such as range anxiety, are important factors in the purchase decision for or against an electric vehicle (EV). EV-specific USPs, such as no local emissions, have to be communicated extensively. Even if electric vehicle gain a TCO advantage, this monetary benefit seems not be clear to all customers. Against this background, TCO calculations should be transparent and easily accessible to the public. Economical uncertainties, e.g. about battery durability, can be covered by leasing models. There a two aspects that should be investigated further in the future. The first aspect is costumer-specific requirements. For example, the requirements of fleet operators regarding driving and usage patterns or acquisition processes are much different from private clients. For instance, a tailored battery capacity based on customer requirements could significantly reduce the vehicle price. The second aspect is the case of commercial vehicles. Especially light commercial vehicles seem to be very interesting for vehicle electrification, as this is technological feasible and the vehicles are often used on defined routes. Therefore, a TCO analysis has to be carried out with respect to different customer segments.
