This paper highlights one of the main issues with light weight sandwich design in high-speed rail vehicles: The benefit of light weighting is said to be marginal when considering high-speed trains. A run cycle based analysis method is used to evaluate energy savings, wear reduction, downsizing possibilities and reduced travel time as function of reduced weight. Depending on operating conditions, the relation between weight reduction and energy consumption for high-speed trains is shown to be equivalent of that for both automobiles and aircrafts. Percent energy savings per percent reduced weight are clearly comparable with those of automotive and aeronautical applications. The assumption that energy savings per reduced weight-percent are larger for applications with more stop-start traffic as compared to high-speed traffic is true when looking at the energy consumption per train/km. However, from a larger perspective this may not be the case. Long distance high-speed trains can have average travel distances of 500000 km per year, while, for example, metro applications are typically in the range of 100 000 km/year. Looking at total energy savings per year it could be more effective to reduce the weight of high-speed trains as compared to metro. Furthermore, it was assumed that the average occupancy was the same for the LD and REG runs. Long distance, high-speed, traffic commonly has a higher occupancy as compared to regional trains, further increasing the benefit of light weighting on high-speed applications. That operating conditions influence the benefit of weight reduction is well known. Herein the benefits for high-speed operations have been shown to be greater than previously thought. For the less powerfull train it is most beneficial to simply reduce the weight and reduce running time. However, for the more powerful train, running the same line, it is approximately as beneficial to only reduce the weight as it is to also reduce the motor power of the vehicle. This emphesises the importance of run-cycle analysis.
