The city of Bordeaux uses electric garbage trucks since several years. The mission profile of these vehicles is made of many starting/braking cycles, so the peak to average power ratio is increased. Therefore, batteries are oversized and the performances decrease, in terms of range or payload. Considering the specificity of the mission profile, power and energy requirements has been quantified. So, to improve performances, an hybrid electric vehicle structure, in the meaning of sources multiplicity, is proposed. In this structure, battery acts as an energy source, and electromechanical storage system acts as a power source. To validate this principle applied to heavy duty vehicle, tools have been designed. The first tool is a software simulator developed in Matlab/Simulink environment. The modeling used allows to correctly recreate the behavior of hybrid and electric vehicles. In order to validate simulation results, it has been designed and realized a dynamic test bench with programmable load. This is a hard simulation tool at reduced scale of power, and it makes the experimentation easier than on board the vehicle. The purpose of this test bench exploitation is to confirm the similitude law between this tool and the vehicle before implementation. For determined mission profiles, the test bench instrumentation allows to measure mechanical and electrical quantities. Therefore, we can quantify energy flows in the power train with or without the electromechanical storage system. The use of these two simulation tools (software and hardware), allows us to verify the sources management and hybrid structure benefits in case of heavy duty vehicles.
