The dangerous activities of the war fighter require massive amounts of spatial information about the battle space and the enemy. Acquiring, digesting, and presenting this information to the local commander is the task of the military intelligence support group at the site. Keeping it current, and delivering the critical parts of the conclusions to the right people on time is a very challenging task. The tool that permits the integration, analysis and display of the results is the Geographical Information System. Once the backbone of the database has been prepared and quality controlled at a technical support center, the field use of the data bank, and its updating and maintenance become matters easily dealt with by the image intelligence specialists at the site of conflict, if they have the right tools and expertise. A simplified and portable computer system and GIS can be used for this work. The current move of the U.S. Government away from legacy systems and towards COTS components will greatly speed up the interoperability of the spatial data layers for the battle space.
