This is the first CHECO Report devoted exclusively to the topic of Air Defense in Southeast Asia (SEA) although a great number of CHECO reports deal with the subject to some extent. This report does not attempt to usurp the areas covered by other reports, but they are referenced to point the reader to areas where amplification or greater detail may be found. The achievement of air superiority is one of the first tasks of tactical air forces in any theater of operations. Although there had been no demonstrated opposition to the U.S. assuming air superiority in South Vietnam, the protection of ground. naval, and air forces required a continuous air defense alert. This report covers the development of the SEA Air Defense capability-- U.S. and indigenous forces-- including a consideration of command and control, the Aircraft Control and Warning (AC&W) subsystem of the Tactical Air Control System (TACS), the alert commitments, and counter-air defense for special air missions and out-of- country operations.
