This paper contrasts the current challenge to the Marine Corps mission with the historical challenges it has faced. It utilizes the tools developed by Neustadt and May in Thinking in Time, to help the reader evaluate the future role of the Corps by comparing the past and present. It highlights the similarities in the social, economical, and political environments that frame the challenges, and suggests how Marine Corps leadership may answer the current question. The writer suggests that the Marine Corps should not chase technical solutions or focus solely on the current trends in war fighting; it should concentrate on its core mission and its expeditionary roots.
