The House Science Committee reported a bill April 25 to reauthorize programs under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration through fiscal year 1994. The bill, HR 1988, would authorize appropriations of $725.6 million for NASA's Earth sciences programs in the coming fiscal year. That amount is $50 million less than the Bush administration requested but $57.7 million above the current spending level. The Earth sciences budget includes the Mission to Planet Earth program, part of an international satellite project to study the Earth's environment and evidence of global climate change. The bill would authorize $830 million for Earth sciences in fiscal 1993 and $950.5 million in fiscal 1994, representing annual increases of 10 percent when inflation is factored in.
