This paper covers a comprehensive evaluation of the winding schemes used in permanent magnet (PM) brushless motors used in a ceiling fan. Selection of slot-pole combination is made for the required low speed operation necessary for ceiling fan. The factors used to select and to decide the winding, including, mechanical speed, size constraints, and winding parameters are primarily considered. The winding schemes are also classified based on their symmetricity, fundamental winding factors, and physical phenomena like cogging torque, and noise & vibration effects, and their suitability for the desired application is assessed.
