The dissertation investigates the influence of small autonomous aircraft navigation algorithms on flight path accuracy and the problem of evaluating the aircraft deviation from the assigned flight path. The main object of research are the autonomous navigation algorithms. Since the accuracy of autonomous flight is directly related with flight safety, the main goal of the dissertation is to investigate the proposed navigation algorithms and provide methods for improving autonomous flight safety through the navigation prism. The dissertation approaches a few major tasks such as autonomous aircraft navigation mathematical modelling, evaluation of the impact of navigation algorithms on flight accuracy and the development of an autonomous navigation algorithm with the aim of preventing ground obstacles. Task 1 is used for the statistical evaluation of large-scale navigational data. Task 2 and task 3 are devoted to the analysis of autonomous flight navigation algorithms. The dissertation consists of an introduction, 3 chapters, general conclusions, references and 6 annexes. The introduction reveals the investigated problem, importance of the thesis and the object of the research and describes the purpose and tasks of the thesis, research methodology, scientific novelty, the practical significance of results examined in the thesis and defended statements. The introduction ends with the presentation the author’s publications on the subject of the defended dissertation, offering the list of presentations made in conferences and describes the structure of the dissertation. Chapter 1 comprises the review of used literature. It contains the classification of autonomous aircraft, review of autonomous aircraft guidance, control and navigation algorithms. At the end of the chapter, conclusions are drawn and the tasks for the dissertation are reconsidered In Chapter 2 autonomous navigation mathematical model and the analysis of the results, which were found when using provided model, are included. In Chapter 3 new autonomous flight navigation methodology for safe ground obstacle avoidance is presented and described. Results of autonomous navigation accuracy obtained by performing real flight experiments and from software in the loop simulations are provided. Six articles focusing on the subject of the discussed dissertation have been published: two articles – in Thomson Reuters Web of Science data base, two articles – in other international publications databases, and two – in material reviewed during international and national conferences. Six presentations on the subject of the dissertation have been given in conferences at national and international level.
