This chapter introduces flight testing principles for unmanned aircraft. A general overview of unmanned aircraft is provided, including system architectures, use cases, and regulations. Specific design features that have an impact on flight testing include the ground‐based position of the pilot, the control link, and autonomy. The specifics of flight testing are illustrated through two examples with fixed‐wing aircraft. These tests illustrate glide testing for drag polar measurement with or without an air data system, measurements of specific excess power through climb and level acceleration, measurement of the drag polar through coast‐down testing, and an assessment of control link radio range. The chapter concludes with a discussion of flight testing principles for automatic and autonomous systems in aviation.
