This chapter discusses the fundamental techniques used for robot localization, robot mapping, and robot Simultaneous Localization and Mapping ( SLAM ). It helps readers understand why localization, mapping, and SLAM are needed in robot applications in infrastructure environments. It also explains the use of EKF and NLLS techniques in estimation tasks. The chapter provides an overview of the basic techniques used for robot localization, mapping, and SLAM, and gives a broad understanding of different sensors that can be used in robot perception in infrastructure environments. Finally, three practical applications are discussed.
