This chapter first introduces visual sensor networks (VSNs), by focusing on hardware devices able to support internet of things (IoT)‐based communications and developed computer vision applications in the intelligent transport system (ITS) scenario. It then describes IoT enabling protocol solutions and the REpresentational State Transfer (REST) paradigm on which IoT‐based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and VSNs are designed. The chapter also presents the architecture of the proposed middleware, able to support reconfigurable in‐network processing in IoT‐based VSNs. Finally, it discusses the middleware working principles for the parking lot monitoring use case by considering visual sensor (VS) resources for each middleware component, and by detailing the Python code performing resource processing in resource processing engines (RPEs). The feasibility of the proposed solution in low‐cost VSN devices based on microcontroller is proven through a real implementation of the middleware on top of the Contiki OS running in the Seed‐Eye board.
