Engine control systems play an important role in achieving legislated emission limits while at the same time providing a good driving experience for the driver. This is achieved in a dedicated robust controller hardware called engine management system (EMS). This chapter outlines some general aspects of the EMS hardware and software, and the basic functionality from sensors and virtual sensors to actuation. Parameter calibration and storage functionality, in the form of maps, is available for control and calibration engineers and this is highlighted in the chapter. The chapter shows a calculation sequence used in a rapid prototyping EMS that implements the torque‐based structure. The block SensorCalc generates all relevant signals for the EMS, for example raw sensor values, filtered sensor values, as well as non‐measured variables that can be calculated from inputs and other measured outputs.
