This chapter introduces phase change materials (PCMs) and evaluates the advantages/drawbacks of different type of PCMs and methods of improving their heat transfer capabilities. It explains thermodynamic approach for utilizing, evaluating and improving PCMs in battery thermal management applications. The effectiveness of a thermal management system is directly affiliated with the utilized PCM. The essential thermo‐physical, kinetic and chemical, technical, economic and environmental properties that PCMs should incorporate in the design of a thermal management systems (TMSs). Solid‐liquid PCMs are divided into three main types, namely organic, inorganic and euctics, which are further divided based on their latent heat of fusion (LHF) and their melting point. Due to their complex structures and material, PCM systems are significantly costly compared to sensible heat storage systems. Finally, the chapter presents case studies to familiarize the readers with PCMs and PCM based battery thermal management systems.
