Shipboard power system design and development has become very complex due to high power generation, variable drive applications for propulsion, and other ship service requirements. The basic verification is outlined in the USCG regulations for failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) supported by the qualitative failure analysis (QFA) and design verification test procedure (DVTP). Design verification testing using the failures considered in the QFA, the vital system automation installation should function as an integrated system. The chapter shows an example of a typical shipboard power generation and distribution system delivering power to a main lube oil pump. The diesel generator's (DG) operational features are vital for the electric propulsion system. The chapter also shows typical electrical one‐line diagram for shipboard MV and 690 V adjustable speed application with high resistance grounding‐1 (HRG).
