This chapter provides an overview of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1609.2 standard. It focuses on the message formats and message processing for supporting certificate management. The chapter discusses several capabilities that are required to support certificate management for consumer vehicle networks but are not covered in the current IEEE 1609.2 standard. These capabilities need to be addressed either by future extensions to the IEEE 1609.2 standard or by mechanisms external to the IEEE 1609.2 standard. The IEEE 1609.2 standard classifies all the entities that provide or use IEEE 1609.2 security services into two categories: certificate authority entities (CA entities) and end entities. The chapter describes the data structures defined in the IEEE 1609.2 standard for public keys, digital signatures, certificates, and certificate revocation lists (CRLs). A messaging entity is a higher‐layer entity (HLE) that sends application messages. communication system security; IEEE standards; vehicles
