Online retailing has been booming over the last few years, leading to important supply chain reconfigurations and multiplication of the variety of delivery models employed by e‐retailers and parcel logistics operators. This chapter establishes a framework that allows comprehensive characterization and classification of the various operational setups of delivery models commonly employed by e‐retailers globally. It performs a literature review and analyzes thirty one case studies across five continents in order to identify eighteen variables that characterize potential operational setups for last‐mile e‐commerce distribution. By examining the commonalities and interdependencies between these variables, the chapter derives a reduced set of five key indicator variables that allow us to construct a comprehensive classification framework with manageable complexity. Following this framework, it identifies and discusses ten generic archetypes for the operational setup of last‐mile delivery models. The chapter investigates the design characteristics of last‐mile delivery models for urban e‐commerce distribution.
