Through planning that began in the 1980's, the concept for a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument evolved to be a 36‐band instrument with bands extending from 0.41 to 14.24 µm and spatial resolutions of 250 to 1000 m. The MODIS was implemented and flown on two NASA EOS missions called Terra and Aqua, launched respectively in late 1999 and early 2002, thereby resulting in well over a decade of successful operation for both missions and the MODIS instruments. EExtensive pre‐launch and on‐orbit calibration and characterization efforts have been made to ensure both sensors to meet a wide variety of radiometric, spectral, and spatial performance requirements. The on‐orbit performance shows using on‐board calibrators, lunar observations, and well‐known vicarious earth targets that the MODIS instruments have achieved or exceeded specifications of 5% in radiance and 2 % in reflectance for the reflected solar bands and 1% for most thermal emissive bands. In addition, both sensors’ spectral and spatial performance has been very stable. Overall, a considerable number of lessons have been learned during the development, construction, and operation of the MODIS instruments and the results have set a new set of standards for future, similar imaging radiometer instruments.
