This chapter presents the broad outline of the operation of FlexRay. It is subdivided into several parts, respectively concerning: transmission channels, cycles and segments, slots and communication frames, constructing and coding frames, the transmission start sequence (TSS), frame start sequence (FSS) and byte start sequence (BSS) systems, and the concepts of action point (AP), byte, bit and local clock. Before going on to the content of the FlexRay protocol, the chapter begins by indicating the general philosophy of its operation, which is fundamentally different from that of CAN and other protocols which are used today by industry in this application field. The Symbol Window (SW) is dedicated for inclusion of the media access test symbol (MTS). The MTS is used to verify that the local bus guardian is functioning properly. Each FlexRay communication cycle ends with a very special segment, the Network Idle Time (NIT).
