The model reference adaptation system (MRAS) approach offers the greatest promise of applications to aeroservoelastic (ASE) systems. Being based on minimization of state error from a reference model, the success of MRAS hinges on selecting an appropriate reference model. Furthermore, as it has an essentially non‐autonomous error dynamics, the MRAS requires projection‐based adaptation laws for guaranteeing robustness in the presence of random signals. The design process for model reference adaptation consists of the following steps: derivation of a reference model, design of the basic feedback controller, and design of the adaptation mechanism for the controller parameters. This chapter shows that Lyapunov's direct method can be applied to yield sufficient conditions of stability with a proper choice of the Lyapunov function. It was found that choosing a gradient‐based adaptation law with free controller parameters leads to a nonlinear algebraic equation to be solved for the sensitivity matrix.
