This chapter focuses on the development of suburbs and their related challenges in France which stands as a specific field and concrete case study because it exhibits a well‐documented problem that can be widely applied to other countries, at least on a European scale. The history of suburbs is closely linked to the industrial period. The urbanization of suburbs is far from being a linear process, and the territories concerned are heterogeneous by nature, made of towns and hamlets with contrasting size, role and significance. The chapter identifies the guidelines which led to the establishment of suburbs. The issue of housing became more serious after World War II and with new population growth in urban areas. The response to this issue came with the construction of large housing complexes. These complexes were presented as products of modernism in the 1950s and were constructed quickly and cheaply, often with poor quality materials.
