Modern step transmissions use electronic monitoring of its critical aspects to maintain proper performance throughout its life. Utilization of the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) process provided multiple benefits for improving the pressure switch module. Primarily, a robust assessment was performed to assess the technical feasibility of the normally open switch. Second, using robust engineering, additional performance gains were obtained from the normally open pressure switch design. Finally, the cost benefit potential of the new design was maintained by performing a robust assessment between two separate suppliers using both technical and commercial criteria. The noise strategy was selected to ensure a common test environment between suppliers, while the control factors were independently developed. One supplier's optimal design did not confirm, however the achieved S/N was equal to the current production design for no dB gain. The second supplier marginally confirmed a 10.5 dB gain over current production.
