This chapter describes short‐lived unique certificate schemes, their main characteristics, and how to improve their scalability and performance. Each vehicle verifies whether a certificate has been revoked by checking whether the certificate’s identifier is on the certificate revocation list (CRL). The level of privacy achievable with short‐lived unique certificates depends on several factors. The first factor is the level of difficulty for an adversary to associate each individual certificate to a particular vehicle. The second factor is the certificate lifetime. The third main factor impacting the privacy level of short‐lived certificate schemes is the level of difficulty for an adversary to link multiple certificates to the same certificate owner. One way to reduce the size of the CRL for short‐lived unique certificates is anonymously linked certificates or linked certificates for simplicity. The chapter also describes one way to construct the certificate tags.
