This chapter primarily address advancements in aviation communications research that offer potential improvements for Flight Data Recorder (FDR)/ Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) data streaming. It initially focuses on introducing system wide information management (SWIM), a platform developed by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to facilitate the sharing of aeronautical data. Air‐to‐air (A2A) communication plays a crucial role in future aviation systems, encompassing tasks such as separation assurance, collision avoidance, and providing passengers with in‐flight Internet access for entertainment purposes. The chapter delves into the four primary technologies employed in A2A communication, as highlighted in Zhang et al: airborne collision avoidance system (ACAS), airborne separation assurance systems (ASAS), L‐DACS1 A2A Mode, and free‐space optical (FSO) communications. It concludes with a discussion of emerging technologies shaping aviation communication, including Single‐Pilot Operations (SPOs) that rely on robust airplane‐ground connectivity for remote operations.
