The conservation of mass and momentum equations ‐ also known as continuity equation and Navier‐Stokes equations ‐ form a system of coupled, nonlinear, partial differential equations. This chapter explains the basic concepts of using the conservation of mass and conservation of momentum principles with two examples: calculating the drag of an object in a wind tunnel, and computing the drag of a submerged vessel in an unbounded fluid. The reaction of the drag force is an external force (surface force) acting on the fluid Solution between inlet and outlet. One can employ the conservation of mass and momentum principles to solve this problem. Since the equations are applicable to any flow problem, he/she needs additional equations to make the solution specific to the given problem. These additional equations are derived from boundary conditions. The chapter specifies appropriate boundary conditions.
