Transport is one of the essential links in the logistics chain, the importance of which has been reinforced by globalization. Freight transport is often rightly presented as a non‐virtuous activity in terms of ecological and societal transition. The observation that transport‐related pollution is on the rise can lead to pessimism, yet there are ways to make transport more sustainable and more virtuous. Before exploring alternative solutions to traditional freight transport, it is first necessary to take stock of the regulatory or incentive measures that support the move towards more sustainable transport. Among the best practices in transportation, there are a number that relate specifically to sustainable transportation. The best practices presented in this chapter can be considered a meta‐best practice: reorganizing networks and opting for the most sustainable modes; optimizing routing; optimizing vehicle or container loading; choosing more sustainable modes of transportation; and managing the last mile.
