The main objective of the fleet assignment model (FAM) is to maximize the net revenue of the airline. Without accurate representation of the spill‐and‐recapture mechanism, the solution quality of the fleet assignment problem could be seriously impacted. This chapter presents the itinerary‐based FAM (IFAM) that considers itinerary‐based demand with spill‐and‐recapture mechanism. It then shows the impact of flight dependencies on spill cost estimation. The chapter shows an example that illustrates the effect of the strategy used to spill passengers on the spilling cost. It also shows that using a strategy that considers the network effect and interdependencies between connecting and nonconnecting itineraries could reduce the spilling cost. Next, the chapter demonstrates how the spill cost is represented mathematically. It discusses the objective function of the IFAM and finally explores the constraints of IFAM, which include the coverage, the balance, and the resources constraints.
