This chapter presents analysis of real‐life applications to illustrate the efficacy on the design, development and optimization of electric vehicle battery thermal management systems with various case studies. The case studies start from examples in evaluating different types of vehicles in terms of performance, cost and environmental impact. The chapter investigates the characteristics of electric vehicle Li‐ion battery thermal problems and offers the solutions with respect to various thermal management systems. Applications of current and novel phase change materials are also provided to illustrate methods of enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the electric vehicle battery thermal management systems. Experimental studies are conducted on refrigerant clathrates for use in cooling applications. Charging time, discharging time, thermal properties, energy, exergy and battery cooling characteristics are evaluated for the phase change material (PCM). The chapter describes the heat transfer and fluid flow equations, boundary and initial conditions required to solve the problems.
