This chapter provides a general discussion on the different ways in which laser cutting may take place and outlines the components of a laser cutting system. It details the different forms of laser drilling. The chapter discusses the essential process parameters, followed by an analysis of the material removal process. It then discusses new developments such as micromachining and laser‐assisted machining. The process of laser cutting can occur in one of three forms: fusion cutting, sublimation cutting, and photochemical ablation. The major factors that determine the quality of the cut part are the surface striations, dross formation, and cracking. The chapter discusses the mechanisms of striation and dross formation. Laser drilling is used in applications such as jet engine turbine airfoils, injector nozzles, and watches. There are three ways in which a hole can be produced by laser drilling: single‐pulse drilling, multi‐pulse percussion drilling, and trepanning.
