Sustainable aviation demands renewable jet fuels to make future air travel environmentally friendly. This chapter addresses the challenges and opportunities in sustainable aviation fuels from renewable alternative jet fuels, to liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquid hydrogen, LH2, and fuel for compact fusion reactor. Based on the global abundance, i.e. proven reserves of natural gas, competitive price, and the capacity to build additional LNG liquefaction plants to meet aviation needs, LNG can safely enter the mix of energy sources under consideration for sustainable aircraft fuel in the near‐ to medium term. As a source of energy, bio‐crops can be used to generate electricity for the next generation of support vehicles at the airports, batteries onboard aircraft, among others, all need electricity. There are two promising open‐cycle battery systems: zinc‐air and lithium‐air. The lithium‐air open‐cycle battery offers the highest storage density.
