This chapter presents the fundamentals of state estimation theory and the tools for the design of state‐of‐the‐art algorithms for target tracking and navigation. It covers the basic concepts and estimation techniques for static and dynamic systems, linear and nonlinear, as well as adaptive estimation. Special emphasis is given to the statistical tools that can be used for the interpretation of the output from stochastic systems. A discussion of discrete time estimation algorithms is included. Guidelines for the design of tracking filters are given and illustrated in several examples using the companion software DynaEstTM. A step‐by‐step demonstration of how to use DynaEstTM is provided and a problem solving section appears at the end of the chapter.
