Electrical systems have made significant advances over the years as aircraft have become more dependent upon electrically powered services. A brief historical description leads to the typical power supplies of many contemporary aircraft to illustrate the trend towards high power levels and different supply voltages and frequencies.
The continued increase in the power levels and in the complexity of aircraft electrical loads resulted in the adoption of load management systems and multiple back‐up generators. The further reliance of high integrity systems upon the aircraft electric systems was also a significant driver. The advances in high power solid state switching technology together with enhancements in the necessary control electronics have made variable‐speed/constant frequency (VSCF) systems a viable proposition in the last decade.
Most civil aircraft today are twin engine aircraft and the basic electrical system architecture varies little between different aircraft types. The chapter provides a description of a typical modern electrical power generation and distribution system, taking into account ETOPS, to provide a robust and reliable system. Examples of systems in current use are given for modern aircraft types. As well as describing the key components of power systems the chapter examines the installation aspects of wiring, bonding and earthing and wiring protection devices.
