Bird strike management has a vital role in minimizing or preventing losses to lives, aircraft, and money. Many misconceptions are first identified to select the appropriate procedure for preventing or minimizing bird strikes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Wildlife Strike has a comprehensive database of all of the bird strike reports since 2000.

    For the reduction of bird strike hazard, there are three disciplines: awareness, bird management (control and avoidance), and aircraft design.

    Firstly, awareness means recognizing the presence, problems, and danger of birds at and around an airport.

    Secondly, concerning bird management, four areas are described – airport and surroundings control, air traffic service (ATS) providers, pilots, and air operators. Airport and surroundings control are categorized into active and passive methods. Active methods include pyrotechnics, bioacoustics, depredation, propane gas cannons, dogs, falconry, shooting, radio‐controlled crafts, use of all‐terrain vehicles (ATVs), pulsating lights, dead birds, fake hawks, lasers, chemical repellents, scarecrows, scaring paints on aircraft, and scaring aircraft design. Finally, removal of nests, eggs, and young, as well as sterilization of eggs – methods which are extremely effective in reducing the bird population. Passive methods include grass management, managing reforested areas, landscaping, water‐habitat management, landfill, and managing agricultural programs in air bases. Concerning ATS providers, all duties for controllers and flight‐service specialists (FFS), terminal controllers, tower and ground controllers, as well as FSS are specified. Pilots have vital roles, which include preflight preparation, taxiing, takeoff, climb, en route, approach, landing, and post‐flight phases. The responsibilities of air operators in flight planning and operating principles for fixed‐wing aircraft are described. Next, the requested operations for personnel handling rotary wing helicopters and helipads are identified. Finally, bird avoidance is governed using either or both of the following systems: avian radars and optical devices. Optical devices include high resolution as well as infrared cameras.

    Third, manufacturers of both aircraft and engines must fulfill the endurance limits of their products to bird strikes in their designs as stated by aviation authorities (TC [Transport Canada], FAA, and EASA [European Aviation Safety Agency]).
