France's Fourth Army, under the command of General Henri Gouraud, fought the war's final campaign alongside the Americans, with orders to keep up with U.S. First Army and to reach the River Meuse at the important rail junction of Mézières. This operation was part of Marshal Ferdinand Foch's “general offensive,”, intended to be a series of destabilizing blows against the whole enemy front. This analysis of Fourth Army's performance is based on the French army archives. It takes account of the coalition nature of the war's final battle, considers the technological and logistical factors that made it a successful, if hard‐fought, operation, and uses the French army's morale reports, derived from the postal control censorship commissions. In addition, it supplies full details of casualties and captures.
