Efficient propulsion systems can revolutionize the use of nanosatellites, enabling universities and industries to transition from concept demonstrator missions to real space missions that were considered prohibitive in terms of costs. This chapter focuses on the implementation of propulsion technologies on on‐board nanosatellites, a subject that requires a meticulous systems engineering approach which is often neglected or underestimated. It introduces some fundamental propulsion equations. These notions are essential to understand and compare the performance of different propulsion systems. The chapter describes some key considerations and challenges in a typical micropropulsion development process. These challenges could be overcome with the use of a systems engineering approach in the development. The chapter provides a quick overview of the existing propulsion technologies (both chemical and electrical) that can be of interest to nanosatellites. It presents some typical values for the delta‐v required by various maneuvers for nanosatellites and a review of systems under development worldwide.
