Electric vehicles (EVs) are considered as energy storage devices with a flexibility attractive to the electricity system. By nature the EVs will be spread out in the distribution grid. How to aggregate these EVs and make their flexibility available to the electricity system is investigated through simulation of a number of scenarios, where different aggregation strategies (unmanaged versus EV portfolio management) are compared with respect to their grid impact using the grid on Bornholm as a case study. It is shown that aggregating EVs through a fleet operator represents the most attractive strategy both in relation to flexibility and lowest cost. Finally, even though fleet‐operator‐based aggregation fits the existing electricity system very well, the analysis presented reveals that EV fleet‐operator‐based charging will also cause a challenge to the distribution grid if a distribution system operator‐driven market for congestion is not established.
