This chapter focuses on the analysis of automation in military convoy operations under a variety of conditions, but consisting of only three vehicles for a 60‐min mission. It establishes an automation continuum for military convoy operations and discusses how analyzing the trade‐space between human input proportion and robotic decision‐making ability can inform important decisions about system design configurations. The framework described in this chapter is a way to consider the various implementations of semi‐automation and automation and assists engineers, military acquisition personnel, and military logistics professionals to discuss both the minimal requirements and the maximum boundaries of automation that should be fielded as technology advances. This automation continuum and model can serve as the basis for further discussions and analysis as the department of defense (DoD) wrestles with the incorporation of automation into military convoy operations.
